GIOCONDA in Genoa

GiocondaGenova

This bus does not arrive. And I’m late to school, then they all get angry, the story professor at the first hour, my parents, who the director will definitely call when they do not see me, and even George waiting for the Nintendo chart he had lent to me …

This is the first line of a theatrical performance built with the children who participated in “GIOCONDA laboratory: the young people decide on the environment” at the Science Festival in Genoa last year (2013), for children aged 8 to 13.

The guys, transformed into several characters at the center of a large city traffic jam, have imagined various solutions to protect the surrounding environment, and have responded to a questionnaire about their knowledge and perceptions of the environment and health issues.

On October 29, 2014, their suggestions, ideas, perceptions and desires were presented at a conference that was held at Science Festival in Genoa.

After the introduction of Pietro Greco on the right of young people’s scientific citizenship and the introduction to LIFE GIOCONDA project by Liliana Cori, children of the VB of Gilberto Govi elementary school, thanks to the commitment of all students and to the coordination of the teachers Luisa and Silvia, have staged the results of the Laboratory.

On the stage, five characters talked about the environment and health and recommended their Mayor what to do to improve the situation: a child – Jack – coming from a foreign country – Canada – and has a different look on the city than his Genoese peers, a teacher, a pediatrician, an environmental technician, and a worried mayor.

Their performance took place in the presence of Genoa Councilor for Environment, Valeria Garotta, who intervened, recalling that the commitment of all, even the smallest ones, can lead to the improvement of the environment where we live, starting with simple gestures as a proper recycling.

Here are the recommendations that have been collected, and told during the conference, by the many participants in the Laboratories.

The challenge is to make the voice of boys and girls heard, because most of the improvement interventions to the environment will have effects on them because their health needs to be protected now and this will count for the rest of their life because they grow in Hurry and will soon be the ones who decide, for everyone.
